Indu Malhotra

Indu Malhotra is a retired Judge and senior counsel of the Supreme Court of India. She completed her law degree from the University of Delhi and went on to earn a Master’s degree in law from the University of Bombay. After briefly working as a lecturer at Lady Shri Ram College, she began her legal career in 1983, working in the chambers of legendary advocate K. Parasaran. She then went on to practice law independently, specializing in arbitration, commercial, and constitutional law. In May 1998, she represented India in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was held by the Commonwealth Secretariat in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2007 she became the second woman ever to be appointed as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India.

In 2018, She made history by becoming the first woman lawyer appointed directly as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. She has since presided over several landmark cases and has established a reputation as a highly knowledgeable and impartial judge. In 2018, She was awarded the prestigious Nani Palkhivala Memorial Trust Award for excellence in the field of law.
She has authored several articles on legal topics, which have been published in leading law journals. She was also a member of various committees that was constituted from time to time by the supreme court including the Vishaka Committee. Being one of the members of the Vishaka Committee, Malhotra was on the panel of women lawyers set up to protect women lawyers from sexual harassment in 2013. She is a counsel in multiple PILs challenging laws under the Motor Vehicles Act and discrimination against women make-up artists in the Bollywood industry. As a member of the Vishaka Committee, Indu Malhotra was part of a panel of women lawyers established in 2013 to safeguard women lawyers from sexual harassment. She has also acted as counsel in several public interest litigations challenging laws under the Motor Vehicles Act and advocating against discrimination faced by women make-up artists in the Bollywood industry.
