As a law professor at Vinayaka Mission’s Law School, Chennai, I’ve always believed that the best way to learn law is by practicing it. That’s exactly what Clinical Legal Education (CLE) does, it takes students out of the classroom and into the real world, where they handle actual cases, interact with clients, and even help resolve disputes. CLE provides opportunities to law students to get first hand experience of real word problems, developing strategies to solve problems, being able to provide constructive solutions to those problems.

Traditional legal education focuses on theory, case laws, and exams. But CLE focuses on practical experience and learning of students, as it involves more inclinations towards active learning by students, as students work in legal aid clinics, mediation centers, and Lok Adalats, helping people who can’t afford expensive lawyers. This hands-on approach doesn’t just make them better lawyers; it makes them more compassionate and socially aware professionals.

Tamil Nadu has a strong history of social justice movements. From Periyar’s fight against caste discrimination to women’s rights activism, the state has always been at the forefront of equality and justice. Yet, many people, especially the poor, still struggle to get legal help.

This is where CLE steps in. Law students in Chennai provide free legal aid, help settle disputes through mediation and even assist in documentation for property and family cases. At Vinayaka Mission’s Law School, our students regularly work with NGOs, district courts, and mediation centers, ensuring that justice is not just for those who can afford it.

The Growing Role of ADR in Legal Education

India’s courts are overloaded with cases some take decades to resolve. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods like mediation, arbitration, and negotiation offer a faster, cheaper, and less stressful way to settle conflicts.

Through CLE, law students train in ADR techniques, helping parties reach mutually acceptable solutions without lengthy court battles. For example, our students recently helped in mediation at Chengalpattu over a property dispute between two families, saving them years of litigation. Such experiences teach them that law is not just about winning arguments, it’s about finding fair solutions.

Internships: Bridging the Gap Between Study and Practice

Chennai is a wonderful city for law students because it offers diverse internship opportunities. At Vinayaka Mission’s Law School, we encourage students to intern at:

  • District Courts (to understand trial procedures)
  • Corporate Law Firms (to learn about commercial disputes)
  • NGOs & Human Rights Organizations (to work on social justice cases)

Vinayaka Mission’s Law School offers comprehensive legal education through its undergraduate and postgraduate courses, blending rigorous academic vigour with extensive practical exposure. At the undergraduate level, it offers five-year integrated programmes including BA LL.B, B.Com LL.B, and BBA LL.B, along with a three-year LL.B (Hons.) programme. At the master's level, the LL.M programme specialises in Commercial Dispute Resolution and Corporate & Financial Laws, featuring extensive capstone projects that provide students with hands-on practical experience.

These internships don’t just add value to their resumes, they shape their careers. The old idea of a lawyer is one who fights in court for years is changing. Today, the best lawyers are those who prevent disputes before they reach court. CLE and ADR train students to be problem-solvers, not just litigators.

Conclusion

At Vinayaka Mission’s Law School, we focus on ethics, empathy, and practical skills because we believe that a good lawyer doesn’t just know the law they know how to use it for justice. Clinical Legal Education and ADR are transforming legal training in India, especially in Tamil Nadu. By combining real-world experience with social responsibility, we’re creating a new generation of lawyers who are not just smart but also humane. For law students, CLE is more than just a subject, it’s a chance to make a difference. And that’s what the law should really be about.
