Guest lecture “Clashes of Masculinity in Urban and Rural India”

Guest lecture on clashes of masculinity in urban and rural India

Vinayaka Mission’s Law School (VMLS) organized a guest lecture “Clashes of Masculinity in Urban and Rural India” on 17th April at the Moot Court. The session was delivered by Dr. Shannon Philip, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Cambridge, and attended by students of the 5-Year Integrated Programme.

The lecture explored the construction and contestation of masculine identities across diverse social settings in India. Drawing on ethnographic research, Dr. Philip examined how caste, class, migration, and media shape varying expressions of masculinity.

Key themes included the dynamics of hegemonic and subordinate masculinities, and the contrasts between rural and urban gender roles. The session also highlighted the impact of migration and popular culture on self-perception.
